SCHOOL-BASED POLICY OF PS 452 FOR USE OF CELLULAR DEVICES, COMPUTING DEVICES, AND PORTABLE ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

SCHOOL-BASED POLICY OF PS 452 FOR USE OF CELLULAR DEVICES, COMPUTING DEVICES, AND PORTABLE ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY 

Students are permitted to bring the following devices to school: 1) cell phones including smartwatches and wearable communication devices (“cellular devices”); 2) laptops, tablets, iPads and other similar computing devices; and 3) portable entertainment systems, such as iPods, MP3 players, PSP, and Nintendo DS. 

These were developed using guidance set forth by Chancellor’s Regulation A-413.

  1. Cellular devices may be used as set forth below. 
  • Cellular devices may not be turned on or used while on school property. The cellular device must be kept in the child’s backpack during the school day and turned off. The school bus is considered school property and as such cellular devices may not be turned on or used on the bus. Failure to comply, will result in the cellular device removed from the child and returned at the end of the day or to the guardian. 
  1. Computing devices may be used as set forth below. 
  • Any computing devices may not be turned on or used during school hours, including early morning drop off or on the school bus. 
  1. Portable entertainment systems may be used as set forth below. 
  • Portable entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during the school day, including early morning drop off including early morning drop off or on the school bus. 
  1. The use of cellular devices, computing devices and portable entertainment systems at school is subject to the restrictions below. 
  • Cellular devices and portable entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school quiz, test, or examination. 
  • Computing devices may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school quiz, test, or examination, except where such use has been explicitly authorized by the school or is contained in an Individualized Education Program or Section 504 Accommodation Plan. 
  • Use of cellular devices, computing devices, portable entertainment systems, and other electronic devices during the administration of state standardized examinations is governed by State Education Department rules.
  • Cellular devices and portable entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during school evacuation drills or other emergency preparedness exercises.
  • Cellular devices, computing devices, and portable entertainment systems may not be used in locker rooms or bathrooms. 
  1. Confiscation and return of cellular devices, computing devices, and portable entertainment systems. 

Where appropriate, measures will be instituted in a progressive fashion. Such measures may include, but are not limited to: 

  • warnings confiscation of item and return at end of school day  
  • confiscation of item and return following parent conference 
  • confiscation of item and return following student entering into behavioral contract 
  • revocation of privilege to bring items to school. 

 

  1. Discipline 
  • Students who use cellular devices, computing devices, and/or portable entertainment systems are in violation of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor Regulation A-413, and the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“ISUSP”) and will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.
