Weather Emergencies

In the case of severe weather conditions, the Chancellor, in consultation with other city officials, will determine whether to close schools or delay their opening. By 6:00 am, you can confirm the decision to close or delay a school opening by:

  • Visiting the Department of Education website homepage
  • Calling 311
  • Radio: WINS (1010 AM), WCBS (880 AM), WLIB (1190 AM), WBLS (107.5 FM), WNYE (91.5 FM)
  • Television: NY1 (Ch. 1), WCBS (Ch. 2), WNBC (Ch. 4), WNYW (Ch. 5), WABC (Ch. 7)
  • We also recommend subscribing to Notify NYCOpens in a new browser tab, New York City's emergency alert system.

Busing
When there is an authorized citywide delayed school opening, school buses run, but arrival times are delayed by two hours. If weather conditions necessitate an early dismissal, the Chancellor notifies bus services of the earlier dismissal schedule. School staff remain at school with children until buses arrive for dismissal. You should advise your child to tell the teacher if no one is at home at the time of an emergency early dismissal. Please have plans in place with a relative, friend or neighbor in case your child is released early and you will not be at home to care for him or her. Your child should know of this plan. Learn more about the NYC Dept. of Education busing and transportation during weather emergencies.

Pick-Up
Please note that the school is only authorized to dismiss a child to someone listed on the Dept. of Education BLUE EMERGENCY CONTACT CARD. Make certain that the card is up-to-date. School staff remain at school with children until children are picked up.

Field Trips and After School Programming
When there is an authorized citywide school closing or delayed school opening, all field trips, after-school programs (included third party provided programs at school sites), and after-school transportation (including transportation to after-school programs at third party sites) are canceled unless otherwise indicated.
